The ACI acknowledges the importance of Indigenous Assyrian writers as well as the value of their ideas, knowledge, stories, and thoughts. The ACI’s Essay Competition invites individuals aged between 18-30 to submit their best work on one of the following three subject categories: cultural heritage, history, and poetry.
This annual competition aims to provide individuals with the opportunity to not only focus on their writing skills but develop their portfolio. Submissions are judged by a panel of senior academics and the winning essayist shall be acknowledged and awarded for their work.
Entry and Eligibility
Entrants must be:
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia,
of Indigenous Assyrian ancestry who are 30 years or younger, and
submit their essay on or before the deadline.
Prizes
The winner will receive a cash prize, signed certificate, and have their essay published on the ACI website. The winner may also be required to take part in an in-person and/or virtual event as well as any other media-related activities.
The runner-up will receive a cash prize and a signed certificate.

Essay Guidelines
An essay will only be considered on the basis that it is an original work and does not duplicate any other previously published work. Entries must not infringe upon anyone’s copyright. Essays that are deemed to contain plagiarism will be disqualified.
Essayists are required to provide a complete list of references and any other supplementary information at the end of their essay in the form of endnotes. References should be cited using the Harvard referencing style.
The essay must be submitted in the English language.
Essays must be submitted as a MS Word document (.DOCX). Text should be presented in 12 PT font size with a word length of up to 2,000 words (not including references).
Essays will be judged on the quality of argument, competent use of evidence, understanding of the material, structure, originality, and writing style.
